Marking the 49th year of academic dance performances at 黑料传送门, the college鈥檚 Department of Theatre and Dance will present the 黑料传送门 Dance Ensemble in its annual spring dance concert, 鈥49Live: Leaping Boundaries,鈥 on Feb. 23-26 in the Alice Austin Theatre.
The Feb. 23-25 performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee will start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Student Association Ticket Office or online.
In a promise to stage diverse, dynamic and original dance works, all of the new works are composed by 黑料传送门 dance studies faculty members and guest choreographers. The pieces will feature an eclectic range of themes and movements styles.
鈥49Live: Leaping Boundaries鈥 is artistically directed and produced by Professor of Dance Studies and Ensemble Artistic Director Jonette Lancos. Lancos will present 鈥淕rande Tarantelle鈥 to the music by Louis Moreau Gottschalk. The ensemble ballet is based on the Tarantella, which is a popular dance of the southern wine region of Italy, where the workers would stomp grapes with their feet while dancing in a large wooden vat quickly to make wine鈥攁ll the while trying to avoid the sting of the tarantula spider.
The program will also feature guest artist Molly Christie Gonz谩lez in 鈥淐andela,鈥 as the ensemble highlights the Cuban social dance Casino de Rueda. Casino de Rueda combines Cuban dancers with English country dancing鈥攖hrough partnering, the circle formation, changing of partners and calling out of steps鈥攁nd with the West African movements of bent knees, rhythmic footwork, musical sensibility and body isolations.
Assistant Professor of Dance Studies Mark Broomfield 鈥94鈥攚ho assists Lancos in directing with senior student assistants Laura Dolan, Sophia Garber and Teagan Plimpton鈥攃reates the need for spiritual connection in his duet 鈥淎wakenings.鈥 The duet unites Julius Drake鈥檚 鈥淪ometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child鈥 with Ruby Philogene鈥檚 鈥淲alk With Me.鈥
Adjunct Instructor of Dance Studies Deborah Scodese French 鈥85 produced 鈥淎queous鈥 as a modern dance to personify the strength, serenity and rhythm of the ocean. 鈥淎queous鈥 will juxtapose the opening dance 鈥淔iesta,鈥 which energizes the audience in its Latin style dancing.
Adjunct Faculty Member Jody DeLoria will present 鈥淲ho am I?鈥 and 鈥淩1E2V3O4L4V3E2S1.鈥 Both works examine counterpoint and repetition through the very same permutational formula. In addition, Adjunct Faculty Member Jenna Del Monte鈥檚 鈥淲ilted A鈥橰ose鈥 vulnerably analyzes the impact a profound loss has on memories.
